Project Spotlight: Mastering the Slope in Nesscliffe – Engineering a 50m Reinforced Concrete Retaining Wall

Building in the beautiful Shropshire landscape often comes with a major hurdle: the terrain. At a recent project in Nesscliffe, JS Construction (Shropshire) Ltd was tasked with transforming a steep, unusable slope into a precision-engineered foundation for two new luxury homes.

This wasn’t just a simple landscaping job—this was a heavy-duty civil engineering project requiring massive earthworks and structural reinforced concrete.

The Challenge: Turning a Hillside into a Home-Site

To make the site viable for construction, we had to “cut” into the existing hillside to create a level building plateau. This required a massive earthmoving operation, shifting 3,200 tonnes of material to re-profile the landscape.

Once the site was cleared, the focus shifted to the “backbone” of the development: a massive 50-metre long reinforced concrete (RC) retaining wall.

Project at a Glance:

FeatureSpecification
Total Wall Length50 Metres
Maximum Height3 Metres
Concrete Volume130m³ (Specialized Waterproof Mix)
Steel Reinforcement12 Tonnes of High-Tensile Rebar
Earthworks3,200 Tonnes Excavated

Strength from Within: 12 Tonnes of Steel

To withstand the immense lateral pressure of the Nesscliffe soil, the wall was built with a heavy-duty “cantilever” design. Our team tied 12 tonnes of reinforcement steel, creating a rigid internal skeleton through the footing, the “toe,” and the 3-metre-high vertical stem.

By using 130m³ of waterproof concrete, we didn’t just provide structural support; we ensured the wall acts as a primary moisture barrier, protecting the future homes from groundwater seepage—a critical detail for long-term durability.

From Groundwork to Grandeur

Working through the Shropshire winter required tight site management and precision levels. With the 3,200-tonne excavation complete and the wall cured, the site is now a perfectly stable, level platform ready for the brickwork to begin.

This project is a prime example of the large-scale structural concrete and groundworks capabilities JS Construction (Shropshire) Ltd brings to residential and commercial developments across the region.
